Why I Teach Hatha Yoga

People often ask me why I chose to teach Hatha yoga. For me, it comes down to how this practice helped me find steadiness, strength, and ease — not just on the mat, but in life. Hatha yoga has a pace that feels honest and supportive, giving space to breathe, notice, and simply be.

My Journey with Yoga

I used to practise yoga at Living Peace Yoga in NSW, where I learnt from teachers whose care and guidance shaped the way I move, breathe, and teach. Among their teachers were Ganesh Mohan, Simon Borg-Olivier, and Ram Dass, who through my teacher Hanuman Das introduced meditation and mindfulness into my practice. These are just a few of the many influences that continue to inspire me. Their approach reminded me that yoga is about presence and connection — not just postures.

Finding My Feet in WA

When I moved to WA, I noticed many modern class names felt confusing, and some styles didn’t resonate with the yoga I wanted to practise. After two lot’s of major surgery, I also realised that Vinyasa or Ashtanga-style classes were too intense — even small movements could risk injury. Studios didn’t always offer gentler variations, so I needed a practice that met me where I was. Hatha felt like home — familiar, steady, and adaptable for all levels. Whether it’s a gentle flow or simply sitting in Bound Angle Pose and noticing the breath, Hatha offers a safe and grounding way to reconnect with yourself.

Why I Love Teaching Hatha

Hatha gives time — to feel, to notice, and to breathe. It’s not about performance or flexibility; it’s about showing up for yourself. My classes focus on gentle alignment, breath, and creating a space where you can move mindfully, calm your mind, and leave feeling grounded. Meditation and mindfulness practices inspired by teachers like Ram Dass are woven in, helping students experience stillness and presence even in movement.

Every class is an invitation — to explore, to rest, to move mindfully, and to connect with yourself. That’s why I teach Hatha yoga, and why it continues to be at the heart of everything I share.
