Yoga for Beginners: What to Expect in Your First Class

Starting yoga can feel exciting — and a little uncertain. Maybe you’re curious about what happens in a class, worried about keeping up, or wondering if you need special skills or flexibility. The good news? Yoga is for everyone, and your first class is all about discovery, not perfection.

At Citta Flow, located in the heart of Kalamunda town, Perth Hills, our beginner-friendly Hatha and Hatha Flow classes are designed to welcome you exactly as you are. Here’s what you can expect when you roll out your mat for the very first time.

A Warm Welcome and Studio Tour

Your first class at Citta Flow begins with a friendly introduction and a gentle tour of the studio. We’ll show you where to store your bag, phone, and keys safely, and point out where the toilets and other facilities are located.

This helps you feel comfortable and settled in your new space before the practice begins. Our supportive environment ensures you know exactly what to expect and where to go, so you can focus fully on your yoga journey.

Learning the Basics: Breath and Movement

Yoga isn’t just about stretching or exercise; breath is the foundation of every practice. Early on, you’ll learn how to connect breath with movement, which helps calm the nervous system and focus your mind.

You’ll be guided through basic postures—standing, seated, and gentle floor poses—that build strength, flexibility, and balance gradually.

Mindful Movement at Your Own Pace

Classes are paced slowly and mindfully, especially in Hatha yoga, so there’s plenty of time to settle into each posture. If you ever feel unsure or need to rest, your teacher will offer options to modify or take breaks.

Remember, it’s perfectly okay to listen to your body and move in ways that feel good for you.

Relaxation and Stillness

At the end of class, you’ll experience a period of deep relaxation—sometimes called savasana or yoga nidra. This time allows your body and mind to absorb the benefits of practice, leaving you feeling refreshed and calm.

What to Bring and Wear

  • Comfortable, stretchy clothes that allow movement.

  • A yoga mat (we have some to borrow, we just ask that you give it a wipe down after class).

  • Water to stay hydrated (no glass bottles please) they sometimes get accidently knocked over and break. Bare feet and glass don’t mix!

  • An open mind and a willingness to explore!
